Can a hypnotherapist make me do or say something I don't want to? No. This is not something that ever happens. Some stage hypnotists and TV entertainers present themselves as being able to make you do things, but they really cannot. No hypnotist in the world can make you do anything you do not want to. Hypnosis is much misunderstood. This is partly because people are used to seeing it misrepresented in the media. Also it is partly that people have not had it explained to them accurately. Is hypnotherapy safe? Yes. It is completely safe and natural in a clinical setting and working with a qualified clinician.
What if I can't be hypnotised? You can be. The only problem is that some clients expect hypnosis to be different from what it actually is. They expect a strange experience like a deep unconscious sleep and not to remember what happened. It really isn't like that at all. It is a natural state that can be experienced in our day to day lives. In a clinical setting it is just more focussed and goal-directed.
What are the side effects of hypnosis? We have to be honest, these are terrible! You could find yourself becoming more relaxed, losing weight, stopping smoking, feeling more energetic, and experiencing greater feelings of health and wellbeing ... In other words, because hypnotherapy is safe and natural, the side effects tend to be positive. Stop smoking clients can find they are sleeping better. Weight loss clients often report that they are more relaxed and confident.
